3D printing is fundamentally changing the way products like medical devices, consumer products and more are designed, engineered, made and delivered. In recent years we’ve seen the use of 3D printing increase in medical devices to solve problems previously unsolvable with traditional methods. It’s no secret that 3D printing is an excellent tool to deliver devices that can meet the diverse and variable sizes required for the range of populations. For example, Carbon has worked with Children’s Minnesota Hospital on airway stents for children. Carbon’s technology and 3D printing in general also has opened up a new era of design freedom allows for novel innovations like lattices, which for the first time allow designers and engineers to develop single products or parts with unique functional zones and tunable mechanical properties. A prime example of this is Adidas’ new Futurecraft 4D shoe.

This presentation will:

  • Discuss the developments in 3D printing that make design freedom possible
  • Explain the benefits and innovations provided by lattices and other 3D printed structures
  • Examine the potential that this has for mass customization for medical devices, dental, consumer products and more
  • Describe what this means for a range of industries including automotive, industrial, and more
