3D printing isn’t a new technology, and for decades it was hidden away in expensive labs only available to the best funded R&D teams. When early RepRap and MakerBot printers shrank the technology and price to the desktop size, industry hopefuls declared “the next industrial revolution” and predicted “a printer in every home!” That promise may be close in tone, but it's still years away in timing. Currently, we see quiet but powerful revolutions in STEM education, design, and entrepreneurship — all sectors seeing
immediate change from new access to desktop 3D printers. This session will explore why 3D printing impacted these sectors first, how it’s changing them dramatically, and how these changes will facilitate other larger paradigm shifts.
